The Canadian Associationfor the Study of Islam and Muslims/L’Association canadienne pour l’étude del’islam et des musulmans et musulmanes (CASIM) is pleased to announce that ourbiennial conference will be held on May 1 and 2, 2026 at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario.
Our theme this year is “Entanglements”. In a time of tension, genocide, and pervasive challenges, entanglement gestures to our knotted times, contexts, and realities, be it within relationships, communities, institutions, and/or society writ large. During such moments, how do we unravel and suture, or perhaps even further entangle ourselves, as we study Islam and Muslims? Some questions that may arise include:
- What does it mean to study Islam and Muslims in times of genocide?
- How do identities change?
- How do we respond to tensions? And what are we working towards?
- How are entanglements embodied?
Such questions need not be rooted only in our analysis and engagement of the past or the present, but also of Muslim and Islamic futurity and futures. Abstracts that incorporate the theme of entanglements, understood in its broadest, most creative sense, are most welcome. CASIM accepts papers on Islam and/or Muslims from all geographical locations, time-periods, and methodological approaches. Relevant disciplines include but are not limited to Anthropology, Religious Studies, Gender Studies, History, Critical Race Studies, Political Science, Socio-Legal Studies, and Sociology. We encourage the submission of papers that examine historically marginalized communities of study, including Black Muslims, Indigenous Muslims, or Muslim/Indigenous relations. We also encourage submissions from graduate students and professors. We hope to have some limited funds to support graduate student travel.
Abstracts should be 350-500 words long (excluding references). Participants should prepare 15–20-minute presentations.
The deadline for submission is December 10, 2025.
